Dr. Pamela Day (79 years young)

 

Pamela isn’t your average little old lady next door -- she hikes an average of 4 miles high up in the Glendale Hills five times per week, plays tennis regularly and most winters she skies more days than are in a month. This year Pamela has already skied 39 days, and the season isn’t over yet!

Pamela was born in England. She and her husband immigrated to the United States in the 1950’s. As a general internist at Glendale Adventist Hospital for nearly 40 years, Dr. Day didn’t just give healthy advice to her patients about eating well and staying active – she is a living example. At five feet two inches tall, 105 pounds, and 79 years of age, this trim grandma has lived her life just as she advises her patients to do.

When she was a girl, her family spent time biking and hiking in the rugged mountains in England’s Lake District. Her love of walking has continued throughout her life. She has always spent time hiking and has twice climbed Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain in California. Now that she is retired and has more time to explore the local hills, she sets out almost every day for a walk around local trails. And Pamela’s definition of trail is far from average - she is not shy about following a deer trail up the mountain, beating through local scrub-brush and even sometimes poison oak. Nary a person half her age can keep up with her brisk pace. Sometimes when she returns with scrapes and bruises, it looks more like she’s done battle with a local mountain lion - though to date she hasn’t seen a one, we are glad to report.

Pamela’s advice for staying healthy, fit and trim – have a medium sized breakfast, a big vegetable salad for lunch with just a hint of dressing, and enjoy moderate portions for dinner. And yes, she approves of having a few pieces of English shortbread for dessert.
