Active LA Seniors

Octavia Miles, M.B.A. (72 years young)

Take a look at Octavia Miles and you'll think you're looking at someone who is far younger than her years. Octavia has been exercising regularly since the age of 40 and the benefits show in the way she looks and the way she feels. For one thing, she has never had any type of back problems.

Octavia walks five miles five days a week on a treadmill. She used to walk with a buddy but when the buddy moved out of the area, she found that she enjoyed the treadmill at the gym more than solitary walks. She also enjoys a half mile stroll every evening after dinner and on Saturdays she heads out for a walk around her neighborhood.  She's a veteran of five Los Angeles Marathons.

In addition to aerobic activity, Octavia also spends 10 minutes in the morning on the floor next to her bed doing stretches, leg-lifts and ab-crunches, as well as a shoulder stand for 5 minutes.

As a researcher for UCLA helping to promote healthy and active lifestyles, Octavia Miles is a role model and inspiration who practices what she preaches.
