City of Los Angeles Marathon – March 2nd

With the Centennial of Hostelling and HI-USA’s 75th Anniversary both taking place in 2009, we want Hostelling International’s presence at the LA Marathon this year to be large and loud!

You and your friends are invited to join HI-USA on Marathon Sunday, March 2nd from 8 a.m. to noon at Mile 5 in West Los Angeles to cheer on our runners, Ursula Krummel, Jayme Leslie, and Aimee Wyatt as well thousands of other athletes participating in this year’s event.

The City of Los Angeles Marathon is the Council’s biggest fundraising event. All proceeds go to support our educational programs. This year our goal is to raise $10,000 for program scholarships.

“Peace-ing Communities Together” – A Peace Building Conference for Young Adults

Put your passion into action! The San Diego Council of HI-USA is proud to host the first HI-USA Peace Building Conference on March 7-9, 2008. Join other young leaders (ages 18-29) to discuss ways to expand peace building efforts locally and globally.

Early Registration: $35

Registration (after February 22): $45

Registration includes:

• All meals (Friday dinner through Sunday breakfast)
• Workshops on leadership, cross-cultural communication, community action & more
• Discussions with peace building leaders in our community
• Saturday evening banquet including keynote speaker Joyce Neu, Executive Director of the University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice
• Opportunities to become involved with local peace building efforts
• Creation of a collaborative mural with the UN Association Art Miles Project

The Wanderer Print Edition

This year the Los Angeles Council is changing the way we impact Mother Earth. Throughout the year excess paper is printed and distributed only to be thrown away again.

As a result, we are limiting the distribution of the print edition of The Wanderer to those HI-USA members who do not have an email address. HI members who receive The Wanderer e-Newsletter will now receive a PDF of the print edition each time a new newsletter is published. If you would like to receive the print edition of The Wanderer as well as the e-Newsletter, please email your request to erin@lahostels.org or call (310) 393-6263 x28.

HI Travel Grant

A reminder that applications are due soon! If you’ve got aspirations to see the world and are between the ages of 18-26, apply for the $1,000 HI Travel Grant before March 31, 2008.
