Volunteer at the Santa Monica Hostel

•  What : Walking Tour Leaders are needed to share your favorite parts of L.A. Love hiking, nature, the beach? Lead one of many walking tours through your favorite parts of Los Angeles and act as an informative guide for foreign visitors.

Other opportunities exist - Do you have a talent, a craft or a special presentation you would like to share with our international guests? Or, can you share time for special Community Service projects that give our hostellers the opportunity to help others?  Let us know!  We can start on the road together for greater understanding of the world and its people!

•  How:  Volunteers create fresh, stimulating activities that let you meet visitors from foreign lands.  There's so much we can share and learn.  Without the help of our thirty or so volunteers, HI-Los Angeles/Santa Monica would not be able to provide our guests with the personal interactions that make their stays pleasurable and memorable.

Groups generally depart from the HI-LA/Santa Monica Hostel.  We always need more volunteers!

To get more information, please contactl Robert Coleman at 310-393-9913 x 18 or email: Robert.Coleman@hilosangeles.org.

•  What : Following a guided format, interspersed with your own personal travel experience, teach others the basics of budget travel, rail passes, and regional travel. Speakers must have traveled to the region they are presenting within the last two-three years.

•  When : Each presentation requires two-three hours, most volunteer three-four times per year.

•  How: Training is required. Speakers are asked to attend one training session per year to remain up-to-date on travel information. Call the Los Angeles Council program director at (310) 393-3263 extension 23 for more details.

Support HI-USA

Hostelling International–USA provides far more than low-cost accommodations – we promote international understanding. We believe that you have to see the world to understand it. Leaving familiar surroundings, traveling to new places and staying in hostels along the way helps you experience new places and cultures and build friendships with people of diverse backgrounds. Hostelling shapes perspectives that are less judgmental, that appreciate diversity and recognize the world's interconnectedness. Today it is more important than ever to ensure that all people–especially the young–have a chance to participate in this kind of life-changing travel experience.

Here at the Los Angeles Council, our hostel programs help international travelers connect; our school-age programs opens students' eyes to the natural environment and their role in protecting it; and our community programs seek to encourage and prepare local community members to venture abroad. We need your help to ensure more people have the opportunity to engage in meaningful, educational travel that broadens perspectives and promotes understanding. Make a contribution of your your time, or a monetary investment in the Los Angeles Council of HI-USA and help people around the world to connect.  View a Donor Form.
