Marine Science Program; South Bay/San Pedro Hostel at Cabrillo Beach

L.A. Unified School Teachers, we've got a great program just for your students!

This three-day, two-night program, sponsored by the LAUSD Center for Marine Studies, has a heavy emphasis on marine science education.

Students (generally high-school seniors) are engaged in field science activities and instructed in data collecting and analysis techniques used to study the environment.

Yes, students are able to get out of the classroom and get their feet wet (sometimes literally!) studying rocky shores, sandy beaches and salt-water marshes. Participants travel by boat to sample deep-water animals and compare them to the different shore animal life.

The curriculum is tailored to fit the group's ability based on grade level. This program takes place at the HI-Los Angeles/South Bay Hostel, located in San Pedro.

Teachers must participate in summer marine science workshops with LAUSD's Math, Science & Technology Center to qualify for participating in one of the Marine Science Programs. Once you are qualified and actively teaching Marine Science in the classroom, you may be invited to participate in the Marine Science Program. It is then your job to work with school and LAUSD District Personnel to organize the 3 day overnight curricular journey and to arrange for substitute teachers and school funding for the Sea Afloat Boat Program (~$400).

Already qualified teachers, contact the LA Council program director at (310) 393-6263 x 23.

Teachers who would like to participate in LAUSD's summer workshops at the Math, Science & Technology Center, please contact your local District Personnel.
