Discover Your World Youth Programs More than 90 years ago, a teacher named Richard Schirmann initiated the hostelling movement by taking school children from the industrial cities of Germany on overnight trips to the countryside. His goal was to get children out of the cities and teach them to appreciate and understand the environment. These are the same goals the Los Angeles Council of HI-USA's educational youth program, “Discover Your World” works to instill in the youth of Los Angeles. The Discover Your World program was developed to help teach environmental education, interpersonal skills and intercultural understanding.
Students participate in classes and hands-on training at the Cabrillo Marine Museum and Marine Mammal Care Center, and then they are treated to an evening program that connects them to guests at the hostel. These social exchanges have been the highlight of the program, enabling students to interact with travelers from all parts of the world and learn about other cultures. Students take home a newfound appreciation of the environment and are inspired to realize that world travel might be a part of their own future. If you are a schoolteacher or youth group leader and would like information on the Discover Your World program, contact the LA Council program director at (310) 393-3413 extension 23, for more details. |
