Conference on the Built Environment and Public Health
Los Angeles, May 23, 2006

UCLA Extension and the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, Public Health presented a conference to foster awareness among Los Angeles County decision makers about the public health problems related to sedentary lifestyles that result, in part, from local government transportation and land use planning decisions.

Although Los Angeles has earned a reputation for its outdoor lifestyle, Los Angeles County shares barriers to active, healthy lifestyles with other communities across the United States. Many planning experts agree that our region has led the way in creating environments that discourage physically active transportation options such as walking or bicycling.

This one day conference covered the following topics:

• The growing epidemic of sedentary lifestyles and resulting health issues
• The link between the built environment, public health, and related land use and transportation policies
• Success stories and lessons learned from local government efforts
• Next steps for localities to modify their policies

This timely conference was intended for mayors, city managers, city council members and commissioners of relevant commissions; those who work in the areas of community and economic development, planning, public works, and transportation; and, public health professionals, including physicians and registered nurses, whose skills and knowledge will be enhanced from the information presented. The presentations and moderated discussions encouraged active participation and dialogue among all in attendance.  See more on City Planning and Public Health. See more on Public Health Policy.
