Bike & Bus Around Town Routes
If you haven't cycled in a while,
start with small trips around your town - bike errands to the post office,
grocery store, and theatre and you'll feel great, get some exercise, arrive on
time without any parking or traffic hassles, and save on gas and parking fees!
If you live in a hilly area,
consider biking the downhill direction, and hopping on a bus for part of the
uphill portion until you are ready to tackle it.
Follow the safe biking tips and in
addition, be proactive:
-
If you see a car getting ready
to make a right turn into your lane, make eye contact. If you aren't sure
they see you, yell loudly to get their attention so there is no doubt.
-
Be extra extra careful in school
areas, especially in high-school areas where teenagers are driving.
-
Give extra room to anyone
talking on a cell phone while driving and large vehicles with limited
visibility (vans, SUV's and mini-vans, especially when parents are
driving children and easily distracted).
-
Be considerate of MTA buses
pulling in and out of the right hand lane. Avoid cutting drivers off as they
pull away from the curb. Avoid riding behind a bus in areas where large
trees overhang the street and threaten to shower you with branches and
debris.
